With seven seconds remaining in overtime, the Sun Devils trailed by one. Evan Gordon navigated through four Buffaloes at the rim and laid the ball off the glass as time expired to give the Sun Devils the heart-stopping win.
Just one play earlier, Spencer Dinwiddie thought he had won the game for his team. The Colorado guard made a contested driving layup to put his team up 62-61. Dinwiddie ended the game with 24 points and was a perfect 14-14 from the foul line.
Fans in the Coors Event Center were on their feet the entire second half, but the arena truly exploded when Xavier Johnson threw home a dunk with just two seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Johnson was a monster on the boards all night, finishing the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Nine of those rebounds came on the offensive end.
It seems only fitting that a game like this should end the way it did. No team ever led by more than seven and there were 16 lead changes.
Arizona State (19-7) was out-rebounded by a whopping 40-18, but they took care of the ball and hit the big shots when they needed to.
Next up for the Sun Devils is a home game on Wednesday versus Washington State (11-15).
Colorado (17-8) will try to rebound when they face Utah (11-13).
